This top floor flat in an elegant Edwardian building has all the charming characteristics of its era: gracious rooms, tall ceilings and broad windows. What the owners wanted that it could not provide was a sense of expansiveness associated with a more modern lifestyle.
When moving proved too costly, the question became: “How to renovate a Victorian-era flat while retaining its architectural character?” Our design response was to remove a portion of the ceiling in the family room and kitchen areas to create a vaulted coffer. The resulting “great room” served to unify the adjacent spaces into a cohesive architectural space. A demi-lune window was added to enhance the garden view, and a display balcony created for a sculpture collection. At night, indirect light coves wash the vault with a soft light while recessed fixtures illuminate the artwork collection. In order to keep the vault as visually open as possible we specified steel cables to maintain the roof structure, eliminating the need for heavy wood joists.
