The new owners wished to utilize this room as a home office and so the challenge was to make the space feel as though it was always part of the home. It was previously a poorly constructed addition to the original house, likely added in the 1930’s as a sleeping porch when the lower floor terrace beneath was enclosed to create a sunroom.

The room was un-insulated and drafty but possessed a marvelous view of a stand of redwood trees and a very old magnolia. The tree-house feeling of the space was a very important quality to retain in transforming the room along with essential building elements such as insulation, a level floor and modern windows that retained the widest possible view.

Architectural elements such as a custom wood floor of lightly stained hickory was paired with custom cabinetry, box beams and wainscot in American walnut to extend the rich palette of materials found elsewhere in the home. Warm colors and textures were used throughout the interior furnishings to create a calm, comfortable and intimate sense of place, even on a cold winter day. Modern luxuries include recessed light fixtures to spotlight favorite artworks, and integrated telecom and audio systems for productivity.
